COMMODORE’S CORNER

Your Commodore is, this week, submitting an “infomercial”.  Sorry, but there is a lot going on and I don’t think you will want to miss it!

  • The Marion- and Newport-Bermuda Races are sponsoring a presentation on the Gulf Stream being given online on 9th March by the experts at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, one of the preeminent ocean research organizations in the world. It will be moderated by Frank Bohlen, who many of you will know from his many Marion/Newport Gulf Stream Safety at Sea presentations and weather predictions.

Crossing the Gulf Stream is not something that all of us get to do, but it is an amazing body of water.  It was first charted by Benjamin Franklin in 1769 and has been pondered by navigators ever since.  It is the reason we are sub-tropical, rather than living with the less-than-balmy average temperatures experienced by everyone else who lives at 32°N; it is the reason that Scotland isn’t as frozen as Scandinavia and why you can see palm trees in the Outer Hebrides.  The Marion-Bermuda Race is offering to share with us this deep dive into the eccentricities of this ‘river within an ocean’. So whether you are planning to be racing to Bermuda, or heading south for warmer climes in the future, or maybe you are just a climate/weather geek, this is a not-to-be-missed event. • During the last Marion to Bermuda race, a movie was made about celestial navigation (for those of you who don’t know, the promotion of which was what the original founders of the Marion race were all about). We are proposing a members Club night where we can all have dinner and watch the movie.  Just waiting to get the date from Cassius and the folks in Marion who are distributing the movie – watch this space! It promises to be a great night on the Terrace.
  • The purveyors of that high-end and sought-after Swedish sailing gear, Pelle P, have given us another catalogue! The link to it is on our website and elsewhere in this newsletter + there will be a separate email coming from Wendy.  I have Pelle P gear that is at least 10 years old and it is fantastic, so I would urge you to order without delay.  No-one else in Bermuda sells Pelle P; it is stylish and practical – and RHADC-branded!  Exclusive to us.  You can find the catalogue on the front page of our website at www.rhadc.bm.
  • The final commercial is for our special Valentine’s Day dinner on Saturday evening. It took a fair bit of prompting by yours truly to find out if this was actually going to happen, but romance is alive and well at RHADC!  So, a bit last-minute, but for those of you who haven’t yet made reservations in town, or who tried but were unsuccessful, you can have a wonderful Chef Luca dinner with a spectacular sunset on our Terrace.  See you there?
