I cannot believe that for the 2nd week in a row, I’m writing this ahead of time in case we don’t have power by Monday. We have endured so much already this year: Quo Fata Ferunt indeed!
I never thought anyone would hear me say this, but I really want Teddy to go away! The hurricane, that is. When Paulette’s 2nd half came in from the west on Monday morning and I woke up to the calm, I was momentarily delusional and my first thought was “well, that wasn’t as bad as they said; I thought we were going to have a whole day of this!” If only…. my next thought was for the RHADC marina. Not yet fully repaired from Humberto and now several hours of pounding from the west again. As I watched the seas build up during the afternoon, I could only imagine what was happening at the other end of the harbour with the westerly fetch. We did suffer some damage, but it could have been worse. I do believe that the work we did earlier this year (or was it the end of last year? This year has been such a blur….) with installing the new pilings on the middle floating finger pier greatly assisted with anchoring down the entire marina. The marina is a very important Club asset and it shows that it is prudent to spend money to protect our assets. A stitch in time and all that. With some of the Humberto repair work still to be completed we are fortunate that we have contractors already lined up and so hopefully the additional damage will be repaired in short order. A special thanks to the team of volunteers that came and helped on Sunday morning to get all the boats packed away and everything secured.
Teddy, luckily, appears to be drifting off to our east and let’s hope he continues on that course (my Teddy also tends to drift right when driving in Bda, which may be almost as dangerous!). Hopefully the NE then NW will be kinder on the marina and indeed on all of us.
It was lovely to see so many members (and prospective members) at the Club on Friday evening; the wine tasting on the Boathouse roof ran out of wine, it was so popular and the full tables of folks dining on the terrace almost felt like pre-COVID. Cassius and his team did an amazing job getting everyone fed and watered. Thank you all for continuing to come out to support our Club. I am probably going to be officially put into the ‘old fogey’ box for saying this, but honestly, the music from the DJ down on the Boathouse roof was quite lovely up on the terrace and we could hear ourselves think! I think that for a crowd over a certain age, that could be the ideal distance for the DJ!
I’ll be back next week – would it be too much to ask to have a weekend without a hurricane?
